Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at Wilson Medical Center

December 08, 2021

Patricia Lucas of Wilson Medical Center was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Patricia, a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Wilson Medical Center, was presented the award on Friday, November 5.

Patricia started her career at Wilson Medical Center after graduating from nursing school at Wayne Community College in 1999. She worked in telemetry for 11 ½ years before transferring to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she worked for a year. After her short stint in ICU, Patricia decided to transfer to the Emergency Department in 2012 and has been there since.

Patricia is married to Trent and has two children – a son in college at the University of Washington, and a daughter who attends Beddingfield High School. In her free time, she likes reading, organizing, and watching sports – especially while her daughter is playing.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.  Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do.  The kind of work the nurses at Wilson Medical Center are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

“The DAISY award is one way we recognize our extraordinary nurses at Wilson Medical Center. Patricia is a shining star in the Emergency Department, and she truly exhibits what it means to be a DAISY winner. Without question she shows kindness, compassion, and dedication to our patients,” said Theresa Dix, Chief Nursing Officer at Wilson Medical Center.
