Wilson Medical Center CEO Mark Holyoak is pleased to announce that Theresa Dix has assumed the role as Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at the Duke LifePoint hospital, effective August 4.

Dix comes to Wilson Medical Center from Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, Va., where she has worked for 36 years in different roles, including working as a charge nurse, Director of Surgical Services and most recently as CNO.

Dix says her inspiration to become a nurse came from her beloved grandmother who was an LPN in the community for many years.

Upon graduating with her nursing degree, she began her career as a charge nurse in ICU and continued in that role for 24 years before advancing to Interim Medical Surgical Director and then Director of Surgical Services. Dix remained in that role until 2011 when she assumed the role as CNO.

During her time at Wythe County Community Hospital, Dix continued to demonstrate her record of achievement and responsibility as she advanced in her career. She received the inaugural “Nurse of the Year,” was instrumental in the hospital achieving Blue Distinction Plus accreditation for Total Knees and Hips, and was extensively involved in obtaining the initial Chest Pain Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Care. Additionally, she was actively engaged in patient safety through participating in the LifePoint Hospital Engagement Network and worked with Duke National Quality Program to lead evidence-based practices in patient safety. These are just a few of the accomplishments she received during her tenure at Wythe County Community Hospital.

Dix earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from King College in Bristol, Va., where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2009. She also received her master’s degree in nursing from Walden University in Minneapolis, M.N., in 2016 and graduated Summa Cum Laude.

Dix is a member of the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association Quality Council, a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps, Virginia Nurses Association and American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety. She also served on the board of their local free clinic for five years. Dix has her Multi-State Privilege Nursing License and is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety.

While in Virginia, she was very involved in the community through various organizations such as the American Heart Association, Relay for Life and March of Dimes.

Dix has been married to her “high school sweetheart” Allen for 33 years and they have two adult children – Jared, 29, and Jenna, 26.

In her spare time, she enjoys playing golf, exercising and traveling. She and her husband also love trying to new restaurants and consider themselves “foodies.”
